What do you think about Christie’s New York sale dedicated solely to art created with artificial intelligence (AI)? To what extent is AI art a legitimate form of art?

and the Second category of works that fall short in the exhibition are traditional paintings made from AI images…. but in reality what’s the difference between making a traditional painting from an AI print or a single photograph? (or even a collage of photo images?) You’re still using some sort of reference image to make the painting. And that’s not wrong in the 21st century. Artists have been painting from photos since the invention of photography… So what is more important? The painting or the photo it was painted from?

But works that fall short are digitally designed and printed (or simply just minted as NFTs) like Holly Herndon’s digital print on canvas or Clair Silver’s NFT? They’re beautifully rendered illustrations done on a computer with AI but Who Cares? AI rendered them valueless and the artists themselves will always need to be defending their skills. (or apparently not, if people are buying into it)

Those works are more interesting because they push the materials, the technique and the technology.

Some of the works in the exhibition represent artists that have been studying and working with computer modes of artistic production for some time. Making art that pushes boundaries and explores other avenues of creating. Some of the works explore the history of it like Harold Cohen from 1987 or Charles Csuri from 1966. I think Charles Csuri might’ve invented a way for computers to make drawing.? I could be wrong. Others play around with printing or using non-typical materials like printing on clear Plexiglas etc. One is even the CNC machine itself displayed with the physical painting it made.
